The latest USB 3.1 revision includes the spec for the Type-C USB connector.
You can plug it in either side up, and it uses a single plug type for upstream and downstream ports.
Also a major upgrade to the Power Delivery spec, which, when supported by hardware, will allow bus currents up to 5A, VBUS up to 20V, more precise power management, and the ability to swap power roles so a device provides power to a host.
