As much as it sucks, but with so many bastards around who abuse forums to post their spam there is no option but to go to admin enabled accounts. We have been running our company forum in that mode for a couple years now and it is the only mode that keep spammers our of our forum.
I do also run a personal discussion forum on which I have by now totally disabled the subscribe function since I am getting about 99.999% spammers.
The more popular a forum gets the more vultures show up.
