RS485 PC end
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:46:56 am »
Hi,

In the process of taking over a project from a former colleague that involves a 485 bus. After a little poking around I think (not sure, though) you send data out like normal RS232, the adaptor alters it (adds in addressing data) and away you go. <puzzled look> but dont you have to tell the unit which address</puzzled look> so in theory there should be some extra data, right?, Also looking over his PCB files I can't find a ground RS485 doesn't need one right (hope!)

Glenn
Also does anybody know of a good reference to RS485 other than Jan's book, I feel the need for multiple soucres so I can try say "it ain't my fault"
when it all goes wrong!

Yes, RS-485 networks typically use a protocol that includes an address along with the data.

The nodes in an RS-485 network should have a common ground.

A good source of RS-485 info is application notes from the chip makers: Maxim, TI, National Semi.
