What would be a good starter kit to learn microcontrollers today? I

A lot has changed since I wrote The Microcontroller Idea Book 22 years ago...
Though they are more than microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi and Arduino are currently very popular, lots of kits, books, and other support available.

I started with Arduino, and then migrated to Atmel product development with some of their xplained boards, mostly because it has Visual studio interface I was used to and free compiler. I found other development tools very clumsy compared, even expensive tools. Just my preferences.
