The second question I have is learning how to use HP print servers.
They have an ethernet connection and a parallel port connection. In
the past I found that one can telnet data to the parallel port by
writing to port 9100. Have you written information on how to use
this for bidirectional operation? They are plentiful and
inexpensive. They could be a simple interface on a network so that
one could get status and send data to something other than a printer.
(The hot water heater at my cabin is a great candidate, plus other
stuff, the temperature inside the frig).

Print servers are programmed to support printer operation only.
